On 12 September 2023, under the direction of DSI Director General Police Major Suriya Singhakamol and his Deputy Police Lieutenant Colonel Phayao Thongsen, a DSI team of Bureau of Intellectual Property Crime served 5 search warrants of the Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court on 4 locations at Bangkok’s Thawi Watthana, Bang Khae and Phra Nakhon districts. Also present during the raids were representatives of the injured persons helping identify the copyright and trademark infringing items and staff of the Royal Danish Embassy in Bangkok observing the search. The DSI’s Bureau of Intellectual Property Crime has launched an investigation in this case while working hand in hand with the representatives of the injured persons and the Royal Danish Embassy in Bangkok until the DSI could identify the individuals illegally storing and selling a large number of counterfeit building-block toys and other goods.

The search team found over 12,000 items of copyright and trademark infringing goods and building-block toys bearing the trademarks “LEGO A/S” and “LEGO JURIS A/S” at the warehouses and selling places. The damage inflicted is believed to exceed 10 million baht, which is consistent with the nature of criminal offences to be investigated as a Special Case under the Special Case Investigation Act, B.E. 2547 (2004). The items found were seized as exhibits for examination and as evidence in the investigation by the Bureau of Intellectual Property Crime into the offences under the Copyrights Act, B.E. 2537 (1994), the Trademarks Act, B.E. 2534 (1991) and other related offences.

The DSI has taken active steps to preventing and suppressing intellectual property infringements, to uphold economic stability, maintain international relations and raise Thailand’s standing on the intellectual property rights (IPR) enforcement ranking. IPR infringements not only violate the rights of IPR owners but also degrade national economy. The DSI therefore urges members of the public to report any IPR infringements to the Department of Special Investigation at tel. 1202 (toll-free nationwide).
