DSI and Cambodian National Police joined force in preventing and suppressing transnational human trafficking

 

 

On April 29 – May 4, the DSI's special case inquiry official team responsible for the special case no. 12/2560 (the case of the International Justice Mission (IJM) summited clues about Cambodian suspects involving in transnational human trafficking by taking 12 Cambodian males into a fishing boat in Thailand), led by Pol.Maj. Arish Tatsapan (Head of Human Trafficking Crime Division 3, Bureau of Human Trafficking Crime), traveled to the Kingdom of Cambodia for gathering information relating to the case as approved by Professor Wisit Wisitsora-at, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Justice.

The DSI's team met with Mr. Panyarak Poonsap, Thai Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia, at the Royal Thai Embassy, Phnom Penh. The meeting discussed the human trafficking situations in Thailand and Cambodia and the approaches to cooperation between law enforcement agencies of both countries.

 

 

The DSI's team then paid a courtesy call on H.E. Chou Bun Eng, (the Secretary of State and the Vice Chairman of the National Committee against Trafficking in Person of the Kingdom of Cambodia) before attending a meeting of the aforesaid Committee chaired by Pol.Gen. Ponn Samkhann and exchanging facts of the case.

The team also met Pol.Lt.Gen. Pak Youleangat (the Deputy Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Bureau) at his office. In this meeting, they shared the information on the prosecutions against human trafficking brokers both in Thailand and Cambodia, and discussed the way to cooperation for effectively and efficiently prosecuting human trafficking broker gangs. Then, the team met with the police force in Kampong Thom Province and Siem Reap Province for requesting the case's details and information before collecting information in the field.

In this mission, the team also discussed the way to help trafficked victims in this case with the representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) responsible for assisting and repatriating trafficked victims to the Kingdom of Cambodia, namely, the International Justice Mission (IJM) and the Chab Dai.
